The music of Beatallica is neatly summed up by the name; Beatles songed worked over in the manner of Metallica (yes, the same bunch that sued Napster). And brilliant fun it is too, I was pleasantly surprised by both the musicianship and the creativity on display. Play it to a Metallica fan for maximum entertainment, I reckon. The downloads on the main site are torrents, but if you aren't set up for them or don't want to install another program just to try this out, you can grab the mp3 files direct here (courtesy of mathowie at Metafilter).

Luke Chueh's paintings manage to combine a cute cartoon-like style with a somewhat darker perspective than you might expect, and do it well.

The Bureau of Corporate Allegory has some fun with the illustrations on banknotes and stock certificates. No, honestly, this isn't as boring as it sounds.

Michael Palin is down in my book as not only an all-round good guy, but as a talented one too (GBH is probably my favourite television drama ever, criminally ignored by the whoever is in charge of releasing DVDs). Over the last few years he has been busy filming a series of travel programs, and writing the books that go with them, and now you can read the whole fascinating lot free on his Palin's Travels site. A terrific place to spend an hour or three.

There are a huge number of charities operating in the UK, and they all want your money. You can get more information about any of them from the Register of Charities website. I can see this coming in handy for all sorts of things, but most particularly if you suspect that the guy on your doorstep might be trying to con you into parting with cash for a non-existent cause.

I've been thinking for a while that it's about time I had a rant about the plans for introducing ID cards in the UK, but someone has done it for me (and done a far better job than I would too!). Everything you never wanted to know about the UK ID card
